The ability for users to pre-fund their account. The balance could be shown as $ ammount or as a number of credits.
Allow users to make purchases using their account funds. Products could have an alternative payment method like "$10.00 or 2 credits".
Merchants could run sales on credit packages instead of individual products.

It could be nice to have sales like "for 10$ credits bought, 10$ credits offered". Not really equivalent to a 50% reduction since it is a 100% addition from the customer perspective.

Daniele: The wallet/credit balance option is great. But if you could also add optional feature for store owners where they can enable the option that customers can only pay via wallet funds on store and use payment gateways only for top-up of wallet.
